16 projects praised for engineering excellence

The conversion of New York City’s Moynihan train hall (pictured above) received the American Council of Engineering Companies Award for Outstanding Engineering Effort of the Year. The $1.6 billion transit hub was selected from among 195 entries from around the world to win the Grand Conceptor Award on May 24, according to an ACEC press release shared with Construction Dive.

Designed by Severud Associates in New York City, Moynihan Train Hall, a joint venture of a related company, Vornado Realty Trust and Skanska USA He built the giant project. It expands the 255,000-square-foot Pennsylvania Station across Eighth Avenue and features a towering arched skylight roof “creatively supported by the original giant 150-foot-tall, previously concealed steel trusses,” according to the release.

The project also included new entrances to the station, an expanded West End concourse and a multimedia Midblock auditorium. It is part of the $24 billion Amtrak Gateway Program, a rail-related capital initiative to expand capacity along the Northeast Corridor.

“Sometimes, it’s not necessary to take everything apart to create something new,” Linda Bauer-Dar, President and CEO of ACEC said in the statement. “The Moynihan Train Hall project by Severud Associates breathed new life into part of New York City’s rich architectural history and designed a new portal into the city that will awe and well inspire the future.”
