Not only did the Penetron solution offer an economical solution, but it also provided a more comprehensive guarantee of reduced permeability compared to alternative waterproofing solutions.

In November 2022, the first residents move into the Tower of Life, the newest high-rise in the skyline of the city of Iquique, Chile, in northern Chile. PENETRON ADMIX, a concrete insulating admixture, was used for all concrete structures below grade, including the five-story underground parking garage retaining walls and foundation slabs.
The city of Iquique, with a population of 170,000, is located in northern Chile, on a rocky peninsula overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The city has modern port facilities, fish meal plants, canneries, and fruit and olive farms around the metropolitan area. An emerging tourism industry – with sport fishing and beaches – is also evident with a growing number of high-rise hotels.
“The new Life Tower adds more light to the list of tallest buildings in the city,” explains Domingo Lima, Managing Director of Penetron Chile. “Thanks to the region’s stable geology and soils, the Iquique metropolitan area features the tallest buildings in Chile – outside of Santiago, the country’s capital.”
Located in the heart of Iquique, the new 28-storey residential tower features a stark modern style with sharp vertical lines defining the metallic glass facades. The 156 units are available as one, two and three bedroom apartments. The Life Tower also offers a list of amenities: gym, spa, outdoor pool with lounge, 5-story underground parking garage, restaurant and bar on the ground floor.
Excavation reveals a high groundwater level
The waterproofing of the below-grade concrete structures for the Tower of Life was not originally specified by EBCO, the general contractor. However, due to the abundant groundwater at the excavated construction site, project consultants René Lagos Engineers approached Penetron Chile for a reliable concrete sealing solution. After reviewing the project parameters, the Penetron Chile team recommended the use of PENETRON ADMIX, a water-repellent crystalline admixture, for their concrete mix.
Melon Concretes supplied 2,900 cubic meters of PENETRON ADMIX-cured concrete for Life Tower’s foundation slab, retaining walls, and below-grade concrete garage structures.
Protects concrete from deterioration
PENETRON ADMIX provides comprehensive protection against water penetration and corrosion damage to concrete. The active ingredients in PENETRON ADMIX react with water and concrete minerals to form an insoluble crystalline network deep within the concrete matrix. This crystal growth occurs throughout the concrete structure to fill in the tiny cracks, pores, and capillaries normally found in concrete, resulting in an impermeable, water-resistant, and durable concrete.
“Not only did the Penetron solution offer an economical solution, but it also offered a more comprehensive guarantee of reduced permeability compared to alternative waterproofing solutions,” adds Domingo Lima. “Concrete treated with Penetron also has the ability to self-heal capillary cracks, which lasts throughout the service life of the concrete.”
