Blink Security Camera 2022 Review

Blink is an Amazon-owned company that makes compact, inexpensive security cameras. The company’s battery-powered models are highly efficient, operating for up to two years using only two AA lithium-ion batteries.

Other features that set Blink cameras apart include the option of local storage, so your video footage doesn’t need to leave your home and you don’t need to pay for a cloud subscription service. The cameras feature customizable motion detection alerts, two-way audio, 1080p HD video, infrared night vision, and temperature monitoring.

Plus, they all work with Amazon’s Alexa smart home system, so you can watch video channels and get motion announcements on any Echo speaker.

Founded in 2014 by Immedia Semiconductor in Massachusetts, Blink is a consumer electronics company that makes home security cameras. Blink was acquired by Amazon in December 2017, which also owns Ring, whose security cameras feature in our reviews as well.

Blink stands out in the crowded security camera market for its ability to produce small, inexpensive battery-powered cameras with most of the features of cameras that are larger, less compact and more power-intensive. Much of this has to do with her background as a chip maker, which has given her the experience to develop devices that can do more with less power.

External camera flash

Best for:

  • Those on a budget. This is the least expensive external camera in our ratings, and if you use the local storage option, it doesn’t require any ongoing fees to watch your recordings.

  • External security. With an IP65 weather resistance rating, you can safely place this camera outside in any condition.

  • temperature monitoring. This is the only camera in our ratings that has a built-in temperature sensor.

  • DIY installation and flexibility. With no professional wiring or installation required, you can install this compact camera in minutes and place it anywhere a Wi-Fi signal reaches.

  • Privacy. You can set the camera system to turn on and off on a schedule, so that it is not recorded when you are at home. In addition, you can set privacy areas, so that the camera never records in certain areas.

Not recommended for:

  • High quality video. The camera does not have advanced imaging features such as HDR or color night vision to improve clarity.

  • Covering large areas. It has the narrowest field of view of any camera in our rankings.

  • Continuous recording. There is no option to sign up 24/7. You can activate the recording manually or set it to record when it is triggered with motion.

  • Advanced security features. There are no options to detect people, zoom in and out, track or record 24/7.

Reviewers praise the Blink Outdoor as a versatile camera, with a battery life of up to two years and an option for use indoors or outdoors. It can be wall or ceiling mounted or placed on a flat surface and gives you a 110-degree field of view. It will record a clip from 5 to 60 seconds when it detects motion, with a 10-second playback time before it is recorded again. The IP65 weather rating means it can withstand rain and water jets from any angle and operate in temperatures ranging from -4 degrees to 113 degrees Fahrenheit.

Professional reviewers also note that the camera’s customizable privacy and activity areas allow you to receive alerts only for areas you want to cover, reducing notifications and protecting privacy. However, reviewers say the video quality isn’t as good as the cameras offered by Nest or Arlo because there are no HDR shooting or other advanced features that improve video clarity.

There is also no artificial intelligence to distinguish between people, animals, and vehicles when the camera detects motion, which means you have to check every alert you receive to use this effectively as a security camera.

Are Blink Home Security Cameras Good?

Blink security cameras are excellent value for money and perform well in our ratings, coming in at number four overall. With all Blink cameras, you get two-way audio, HD day and night video, custom motion detection alerts, customizable activity, and privacy zones.

They all work with Amazon’s Alexa and web-based automation platform IFTTT (if this, then this). Alexa integration allows you to use your voice to stream live video, play back recorded clips, and arm and disarm your camera. The Echo speaker can also alert you when the system detects motion.

The standout feature of Blink’s battery-powered cameras is their two-year battery life, the longest of any camera in our ratings. This estimate is based on relatively moderate use, so your results will vary. However, it’s still impressive and gives you the flexibility to place the camera anywhere you want without having to worry about reaching for it frequently to charge or replace the batteries.

Local storage is also an excellent feature, which means you don’t have to pay any monthly fees and can keep your video safely stored in your home. And because the footage is stored on a separate device rather than the camera itself, if someone steals the camera, you still have the footage. Cloud enrollment is also available with a subscription plan starting at $3 per month or $30 per year after a 30-day free trial.

Blink offers some features for free which other security camera companies charge a monthly fee. One of these areas is the customizable activity zones, which limit movement alerts to the areas you select. In addition, the Photo Capture option captures a photo every hour and saves it as a stop-motion clip in the video feed. You can arm and disarm the cameras on a schedule or using the phone app, but you have to do it for them all at once; There is no option to turn individual cameras on and off.
