The company’s latest suite is called “Adobe Cue,” which is a platform that users can use to create, edit, and manage Abode automations. The company doesn’t directly call it out in its release, but it appears to be working on an IFTTT model (if this, then that) that analyzes current conditions and then automates the response, well, automatically.
Through Cue, Abode users can create, edit, and manage their smart home devices with automation that dictates how the smart home platform responds to certain conditions. Home automation is a lot like Amazon Echo hardware skills or Google Assistant routines, which means a user-defined rule that tells the system how to react when certain events occur.
Accommodation automation consists of two basic components: the trigger and the procedure. In other words, when an event (trigger) occurs, execute the command (action). If that’s it, that’s — ta-da, you’ve created yourself the IFTTT platform.
The tricky part here is defining the abode of “conditions”. This is an extra layer of personalization that a smart home automation platform hasn’t announced before. The company says it has added a third component, which means its automation system only responds when an event occurs (and then performs the programmed action, but only if the trigger is actually true, meaning that the smart home’s actions are conditional on what the smart home platform detects in that time.
Abode CEO and Founder Christopher Carney said in a statement. “We’ve taken feedback from our dedicated customer base to heart and built the Abode custom engine to be more powerful than any other software currently available that helps users customize their smart home experience.”
In addition to introducing a third layer of smart home automation commands, the Cue app allows Adobe users to create automations that feature multiple triggers (bundled with “Or”) and multiple actions (bundled with “And”). Users can also create automations in groups that include “status triggers”, changing modes from Home to Away; “location triggers” (triggering actions based on the geographic location of a linked mobile device); and Schedule Triggers, which automate actions based on a user-defined schedule or slash-time-based triggers.
Abode is a somewhat nefarious operation in the smart home market, founded in 2014 by former CEO of ADT Carney to offer a no-contract home security platform with comprehensive smart home security functionality.
