Mississauga is looking for the “next big thing” when it comes to the best architectural and design accomplishments the city has to offer.
Submissions are now open for the 2023 Mississauga Urban Design Awards, which will pay tribute to the most innovative, interesting, and inspiring projects to have recently landed within the city limits.
The Mississauga City officials behind the awards describe the latest program as “a celebration of excellence for innovative, dynamic and innovative urban design projects that are transforming Mississauga.”
Under the theme “The Next Big Thing,” the latest competition will be accepting nominations through April 14, 2023.
After all entries have been received, a jury made up of members of the design community and a member of the Mississauga City Council will select the winners in the various categories this fall.
The Mississauga Urban Design Awards competition has begun in 1981 and is the longest running awards program of its kind in Ontario.
Held every two years, and The Urban Design Awards aim to inspire and celebrate design leaders who help raise the quality of life for residents by shaping Mississauga’s diverse cityscapes, city officials say.
“The Awards are an amazing opportunity to honor the designers, architects, developers and builders who have played a significant role in our effort to build a world-class city. These private and public spaces beautify our city and provide much-needed green spaces,” Mayor Bonnie Crombie said last year while presenting the 2021 Urban Design Awards. to it, art and public facilities for the enjoyment of businesses and residents.
In selecting the winners in different categories, the jury evaluates the entries at the city and community levels, taking into account the living environment, innovation, context, implementation and elements of healthy development.
All entries must be located within Mississauga and have been completed upon city receipt.
The city says owners, architects, designers, landscape architects, developers, or others who played a major role in the design, development, or construction may nominate a project.
Interior design projects, plans and proposals as well as previously nominated projects are not eligible.
Nominated projects are eligible for the following awards:
- Excellence Award: Awarded to projects that demonstrate excellence in all judging criteria
- Merit Award: It is awarded to projects that demonstrate excellence in one or more of the judging criteria
- Health by Design: Awarded to projects that exemplify the six healthy community design elements of Density, Proximity to Service, Land Use Mix, Street Connectivity, Street Characteristics, and Parking
The Mississauga Urban Design Awards also includes a People’s Choice Award given to the project that has the most public support via online voting.
Voting for the People’s Choice Award will begin in June.
Submitted projects must include the following:
- External photos of your project (at least five)
- Brief description of the project
- The names and email addresses of the main contributors to the project
- An approval form signed by the project owner for the arbitration committee to visit the project site
