Mom makes her daughter sign a lease and pay rent to live in the house

There are many ways to educate parents, but that does not make one method right and the other wrong. Parents everywhere make the best decisions for their families every day, but sometimes those decisions can definitely move the bowl. One mom in Oklahoma experienced it recently after she posted a parenting video on TikTok that went viral.

Earlier this summer, the mother of six in Oklahoma decided to share her parenting decision with her more than 25,000 followers on TikTok. In a video clip set to “It’s a Hard Life” from the musical that IShe highlighted her daughter’s signing of a lease agreement.

“When your 18-year-old daughter decides to stay home,” she captioned the video. “Get ready for success,” she added as her daughter Jada signed her autograph.

According to the video, Jada will only pay $100 per month to continue living in the house. The fee may seem reasonable to some given the rising costs of housing and living in the US, however, thousands of TikTok users criticized the parent in the comments.

Some assured her that the lease was a good way for her daughter to never speak to her again while others urged the mother to help Jada so she could be financially stable in the future. But not everyone was negative. Other users gave the mother props to teach her daughter a lesson, and some also requested a copy of the agreement so they could consider it for their children.

Why did the mother make her daughter sign a lease?

After the post received a lot of comments, the mom responded with a follow-up video explaining her teaching moment. “I was a 16-year-old single mom living on my own and my parents didn’t set me up for success, I had to fight for everything I had,” she said.

Everything I do prepares them for the real world. I don’t want my children to depend on me for anything.

She also revealed that in order to rent a home in her area, tenants need a tenant history in order to apply successfully. By entering into a lease with her daughter now, she is already helping her have a better chance of getting a place of her own.

“As for what she’s going to pay, it’s $100 a month. That’s the only bill she’s paying. She doesn’t have car payments. She doesn’t pay insurance or cell phone. This pays for utilities, her room, her food, everything else. It’s not that expensive,” she added. The price is that far.”

The mother also revealed that her daughter was in total agreement with signing the papers and had only one feeling: curfew. “We negotiated and she got what she wanted,” the mother continued. “I wanted it to be legal and I wanted her to understand a legal document. What looked good, what didn’t look good, and how to question it. Don’t just sign something slipping in front of someone just because you think you should.”

How did one mother prove that every family is different

One thing is for sure, and that is that when it comes to parenting styles, opinions abound. The fact that this mom’s video has been viewed more than 2 million times is definitely proof of that, as are the comments below.

Every family is different, and many parents try to do their best for their crew. Support, rather than criticism, can go a long way with a struggling mom or dad, regardless of our personal opinions. After all, no parents are exactly alike, and no two children are the same.

No matter where you land on the topic of paying kids’ rent to live at home, this story is a nice reminder to all of us that there are plenty of ways to approach parenting. It doesn’t come with a brochure and no one is perfect. However, it is nice to try to reserve judgment when we don’t know the full story behind the decision.

After all, they say it takes a village, and these days, such a village can sometimes be found on the Internet.
