OREM, Utah – It was a terrifying scene for residents of a student housing complex in Orem as people ran for their lives after the shooting on the third floor early Saturday morning.
“I thought it was fireworks by the time someone went off in the hallway,” Ryan Posey told KSL TV.
In a video sent to KSL Television, a man is seen backing away while confronting a small group before pulling out a gun and firing at least two shots. Posey lives in the hall where the shooting took place.
“My roommate burst through the door and told me someone had been shot,” Posey recalls. “Kind of freaked me out a little bit. He said, ‘We need to get out now, just leave the apartment.’”
Posey and his roommate started running outside their building at Axis Apartments near 800 South and 1370 West. Posey said it happened so quickly that he forgot his shoes.
“Everyone was in a crazy, crazy loop. A lot of people were screaming, a lot of people were crying and freaking out,” Posey said. “Then at the bottom of the stairs, right when you leave the door, there’s a bunch of glass on the floor.”
As they were exiting the building, the Urem police arrived at the scene.
I was walking at gunpoint. You know the normal commands, said Posey, “Put your hands up, and walk slowly toward us.”
Scary moments in the apartments Busi moved into a few weeks ago. But he was grateful the police were there so quickly.
“I definitely felt safer, just knowing that, like, ‘Hey, this happened,’ and just like that, they were right there on the scene,” Posey said.
Busey says he saw one man being carried on a stretcher and another with a bruised leg. Witnesses say his cell phone in his trouser pocket blocked the bullet that would have hit him otherwise.
“He shot his phone and it bounced. So his phone was completely blocked, but he had a bruise under it,” Posey said. “It was really surreal.”
Urem police said Saturday that they are still searching for those responsible for the incident, although they believe the incident was isolated and that no one was in danger.
Hours before the shooting, Posey said, there was a party on the sixth floor, but then a group moved up to the third floor where he lived, and the argument broke out.
Jake Jarman of Redstone Residential, the company that operates Axis Apartments, said they are in close contact with the police.
“Safety and our residents are paramount, and most important to us,” Jarman said. “Obviously, something like this happening is very worrying,” Jarman said.
Hub Apartments also provided this statement to residents:

When told to leave, one of the trespassers pulled out a gun and fired two shots. One resident was injured. The resident was treated immediately and is recovering at Utah Valley Hospital, and is in good spirits.
