Samsung HW-Q990B Review: An Epic Audio Device 11.1.4

The Samsung HW-Q990B is the latest version of the top-of-the-line speaker from Smasung. For 2022, we see an improved design, support for Dolby Atmos wireless technology, and additional HDMI connectivity.

These features plus 11.1.4 channels of true audio combine to deliver an out-of-the-box setup capable of bringing incredibly immersive surround sound to any room with just four components.

While we were watching the NBA Finals, we finally caught up with the second season of Good gems and crowded action movies, the HW-Q990B got us into what was happening on screen in a few ways speaker arrangements could.

If you pair this with a recent Samsung TV, you can sync it to the TV’s speakers using Q-Symphony and automatically adjust the sound bar in your room with SpaceFit Sound+.

Sound quality and performance

Samsung HW-Q990B Review
The system bounces sound off the ceiling and walls to deliver a great Dolby Atmos experience.
Josh Smith

The HW-Q990B supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X surround sound, with a mix of side-mounted speakers. This new model uses the same number of real channels as last year’s HW-Q950A, and performance is on par with its predecessor.

Samsung uses 22 speakers to achieve a setting of 11.1.4 in this speaker. The speakers bounce off the ceiling to simulate overhead speakers, and do a great job of replicating the Atmos experience without having to place the speakers on your ceiling.

We experiment with a wide range of speakers and audio configurations, and one of the biggest challenges is finding a way to place speakers in an actual living space. While the surroundings are closer to the size of bookshelf speakers, the fact that they only need the power to work makes it easy to use the HW-Q990B in an open-plan living room.

Simply connect the surround speakers to power, allowing for more flexible placement than wired speakers.

With many systems, you need to wire up the subwoofer for the rear speakers to receive the sound, but these connect wirelessly to the subwoofer, allowing them to be easily placed across the room, and therefore better performance. If you can’t place the rear speakers at the back of the room, you can place them in the front of the room and enable a special mode that fits that position.

When paired with a Samsung TV, users can combine the TV’s speakers using the Q-Symphony feature. This integration stood out when testing previous models, but it only works with Samsung TVs. Another feature of the Samsung TV is the SpaceFit Sound+, which adjusts the speakers in your room. However, if you don’t have a Samsung TV connected, you can use the Samsung SmartThings app to use the room adjust feature which can provide similar results. Once you set up the room tuning, the speakers’ design really shined.

This setting really put on display when we saw it John Wick And the John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum. Throughout the fighting period in the club during John WickThe HW-Q990B brought us to the middle of the action with believable shot mode, recoil and avalanche sight. In the opening sequence of the third film, we experienced similar results that plunged us into the scene. I can’t wait to try the new Top Gun: Maverick in Dolby Atmos on this system.

Outside of films, the composition works well with sports and television. The NBA Finals filled our room with the screeching of shoes and the noise of the crowd, and they did an admirable job of bringing the movement and emotion of the game into our room. while binge Good gems On HBO Max, the combination of surround and excellent audio performance sealed the deal as a high-end, epic amplifier for streaming devices. The only problem we have now is finding a new series to start with.

The gaming performance is good, which helps put you in the environment in a first-person shooter game on Xbox Series X without the need for headphones. It also does an excellent job in games like NBA 2k22 And the Forza Horizon 5Balance work and the environment around you.

While I don’t rely on them primarily for music, the speakers bring home our favorite playlists on Spotify, filling the entire first floor of our house with music and deep bass that we just couldn’t get enough of.

Design and Features

The new design foregoes the fabric for an all-metal grille on the woofers and surround speakers.
Josh Smith

The new Samsung HW-Q990B design fixes two of my biggest disappointments with the previous model. The new design forgoes the metallic cloth on the main speakers. This new exterior looks great, shows less dust and dog hair, and is easier to clean.

The screen that displays the input and other information is no longer at the top of the speakers but is now in the front, tucked away behind a metal grille. This change makes it easier to see if it is looking for an entry or selecting other status information while sitting on the sofa.

The new front screen is a nice change.

The Samsung subwoofer is the same size as last year’s model, and it’s a bit larger for a speaker setup but still easy to hide in a corner. It no longer has canvas, so the design is also more modern. As mentioned, the surround speakers are bulky, which can be a challenge to fit one of them on a crowded side table, but we found a way.

Samsung added another HDMI input, bringing the number to two. This add-on is useful if you’re channeling your devices through speakers, but since there’s no support for advanced features like 120Hz 4K or variable refresh rate traversal, most users will bypass these and connect most devices directly to the TV. There is also an optical digital input.

The subwoofer is completely identical to this system.

eARC support allows me to connect directly to my TV’s eARC port for the best sound quality and the most advanced formats for access to my speakers. If you have a newer Samsung TV, you can take advantage of Dolby Atmos wireless support and skip running any wire from the TV to the speakers for a super clean setup, but that’s not something we’ve tested.

With the Samsung SmartThings app, you can connect the speaker to Spotify or Alexa. You can also use Bluetooth or AirPlay 2 to stream from a phone or tablet to the soundbar.

The remote control is easy to use and intuitive.
Josh Smith

The remote control is compatible with the new Samsung TV remote controls and is easy to use. You can easily switch sound modes, control the subwoofer volume and other functions. Once you’ve set up SmartThings app support, you can control your speakers using an app on your phone.

Is the Samsung HW-Q990B worth buying?

Samsung HW-Q990B Review
The Samsung HW-Q990B delivers performance that is worth this price.
Josh Smith

The Samsung HW-Q990B is one of the best speakers in the company and lives up to its place in the lineup. This year, Samsung overhauled the placement of the screen, and this new design was amazing.

There are simply no other speakers that currently offer what the 11.1.4 design does for the price. Yes, Samsung charges a premium, but the performance is excellent. It offers the flexibility and ability to bring Dolby Atmos and DTS:X into your mainstream TV viewing experience without the need for a complex installation.

When paired with the latest Samsung TV, you can maximize the value thanks to Q-Symphony and SpaceFit+, but this is an outstanding speaker in any setting.
