Sawyers Island Resort Reaches Market for $3.95 Million As Current Owners Pledge To Take Over The Good Guys

Known among fishermen as a fishermen’s paradise, the pristine Sawyers Island Resort in the Gulf of Carpentaria hit the market at $3.95 million.

Its reputation for world-class fishing, resort accommodations and pristine beaches means that more than 900 nights of stay have already been booked by tourists for 2022.

Thomas, better known as Tex, and Lynne Battle have been running the tourist hotspot, on the land of the Caydelt people, for the past 34 years.

While interest on the island is high, the couple say it will take a special kind of buyer to seal the deal on the 8-kilometer-long, 2-kilometer-wide property.

“It was a tough decision to sell,” said Patel. “We’ve been here for 34 years, but my birthday caught me and we knew we had to sell.”

“We’ve already said no to some types of developers, and that’s definitely not what we want.

“We want someone who will love this place as much as we do and maybe invest in some upgrades. The chef would be nice, for example.”

Besides its own helipad, accommodation, charter fishing facilities, liquor licence, mobile phone and internet, the resort is the only tourist hotspot in the area.

Many potential buyers have already expressed interest, said Richard Vanhoef of Private Islands Online.

“No other land will be made available for rent on any islands within the Gulf of Carpentaria for use as a commercial resort, so there is no competition,” Vanhoff said.

Mr. Patel said it was an “on foot, off” sale.

“If someone buys it,” he said, “they’ll have everything we have here. Cabins, workshops, machines, everything.”

As the couple prepares to leave the island at the end of the year, they say the highlight of the getaway department are the people they’ve met over the years.

“We’ve met everyone from councillors to millionaires,” he said. “They’re all the same when they’re here. They come here to enjoy themselves.”

“The highlights were just visits from nice people or seeing people who come back year after year and enjoy themselves.
