Welcome to Monday’s potion.
Start your week here with a Monday dose. Here are some stories to follow:
► Help end hunger: The National Association of Message Carriers will conduct its annual national food campaign, Stamp Out Hunger, on May 14.
To participate, people can leave a donation of non-perishable food next to their mailboxes before mail delivery on May 14.
Letter bearers will collect donations that day as they deliver the mail. The donations will then be distributed to local food banks, stores, shelters and churches.
Donations from the Sheboygan Post Office go to the Sheboygan County Food Bank and are then distributed throughout its emergency food network from partner food stores, community meal sites, shelters, and other organizations.
Items that the Sheboygan County Food Bank currently needs are peanut butter, canned soup, canned tuna/chicken, cereal/oatmeal, canned fruit, and personal care items.
► Sheboygan’s Bike-to-Work Week events planned: The Sheboygan Active Transportation Committee is organizing a series of events for National Bike-to-Work Week from May 16-22.
Starting May 16, Paradigm Coffee and Music will sponsor the “Power and Resources Station” on Uptown Barclay’s St. Clair Avenue, where coffee and desserts will be served alongside resources to educate and encourage people to get around safely outside of the car. Resource stations will operate from 6 to 10 a.m. Monday through Thursday, in case of rain or sunny weather.
On May 19, the committee will host a bike/walk/roll in the park movie, which is open to all members of the community. Re-Bike, a volunteer organization that has donated more than 1,000 refurbished bikes to community members, will attend and provide free bikes to any community member in need. The bike donation will begin at 6 p.m., with the movie starting as outdoor lighting permits. If the weather is bad, the film and giveaway will be inside the form.
On May 20, the panel will partner with community advocacy group Active8 to host “Taco ‘Bout Biking 2.0” at 3 Sheeps Brewing Company. The casual happy hour will run from 4-6 pm and is a place to connect with others to talk about amenities, challenges and opportunities to improve access to cycling for transportation and recreation throughout the city and its parks.
The week will culminate with a bike fair in the park, hosted from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 21. The bike fair will feature resources, local vendors, demos of bikes and gear (including electric bikes), and a look at new buses acquired by Shoreline Metro, with demos and information on how to pair active transit with transit. Community members with custom, classic, or interesting bikes are also encouraged to participate.
