The United Nations Shanghai Jiuguang Center opened

The Shanghai Jiuguang Centerthe largest shopping complex in northern Shanghai, designed by UNStudio Architecture studio in collaboration with Nihon Sekkei, recently completed and opened. The two companies worked together to create a structure that could also play a social role and become a point of reference not only for customers and consumers, but also for society. architecture Ben van Berkel From UNStudio, when submitting the project to Shanghai Jiuguang Centre, He highlighted the social role that this type of building plays in China. Not just a complex of retail stores, but the public spaces that serve the city, where culture and commerce come together and where architecture performs a broader function.
The Shanghai Jiuguang Center It was built in a lively part of Shanghai, with an architecture firm Nihon Sky Outer cover design and UNStudio Designing all the interior spaces of the mall, including the central courtyard and its facades, as well as the public upper terrace.
The user experience, understood as the experience of shopping and interaction with different spaces, was the main concept for the development of the project. The complex’s outer layer looks like a protective shell that opens inward to reveal a smooth, luminous experience. Paths and emotions converge in the central core, a full-height courtyard designed as a landscaped interior. This is how the large central void looks like pearl of light, an effect reinforced by the ceramic tile cladding of the courtyard, which assumes dynamic reflections of mother-of-pearl when illuminated by the sun. The full height empty space allows for sectional views and visually connects all levels of the complex, which are linked to each other by flowing escalators and a picturesque staircase crossing the central void.
Equipped with greenery and seating built into the structure, the courtyard is a great meeting and resting place that users can enjoy at any time of the day, while at the same time accommodating shopping mall or community related events. Distributed around the perimeter of the courtyard, and connected to it by protruding balconies and strip windows, three interior spaces. The materials and finishes chosen for each void define three different identities that correspond to three different shopping themes running vertically across the complex:urban stadium“Where lights and colors evoke the dynamism of the city,”urban oasis“Where warm colors are inspired by nature, and finally”urban platform“Where dark, glossy materials recreate the atmosphere of the night city. The ceiling incorporates an element that allows users to move around easily, indicating service areas and vertical connections (elevators and escalators) located next to the voids.
