Scania AB is a manufacturer of commercial vehicles based in Södertälje, Sweden with over 110 years of experience. It currently exists as a subsidiary of the Traton Group, itself a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group.
Despite its long history, Scania is just beginning to enter the commercial electric vehicle space, having recently introduced its regional long-range electric truck that will be available in Europe as both a solid-state truck and a trailer. Scania’s latest model joins a growing portfolio of all-electric truck, bus, powertrain and charging solutions. The company also shared a roadmap for electrification to 2030.
More recently, Scania has been working with Swedish forest industry company Svenska Cellulosa AB also known as SCA, to develop and deploy zero-emission transport to timber transport methods. Now, Sweden’s first electric timber truck has been delivered and will undergo testing by SCA this summer.
Electric timber truck joins SCA to test future transportation
The SCA shared the news of the arrival of the Scania electric timber truck in a recent press release, outlining what the company plans to do as it prepares for the future of zero-emissions transport across 2.6 million hectares of forest in northern Sweden.
According to SCA, it’s already 96% fossil-free, and it developed the heavy-duty electric timber truck with Scania to remove carbon emissions from the toughest transportation sector—heavy transport. Frederic Allard, head of e-mobility at Scania, spoke to the truck’s first delivery:
The 80 ton battery powered timber truck shows that even really heavy haulage can be electric. Partnering with SCA, it’s an early demonstration of what’s possible, and a clear indication that even heavy-duty transportation can be electrified. A change of pace is needed to make Sweden fossil-free in time and achieve the goal of the Paris Agreement. The electric timber truck is a symbol of something great. Timber shipping has been talked about as something that might not be possible to electrify. The development in recent years and what we are now offering with SCA shows how fast development is in both vehicles and batteries.
The new truck can carry a gross weight of 64 tons on public roads and 80 tons on private roads, and is expected to transport timber on the stretch between SCA’s lumber terminal in Gimonäs and the paper mill in Obbola, outside Umeå. But first, the electric timber truck will be subject to testing by SCA all summer long.
According to the SCA, the summer test will be continuously studied by the Skogforsk Research Institute, which will collect relevant data to form comparisons with conventional diesel-powered timber transportation. The data will include energy consumption, productivity and costs similar to existing vehicles to determine what is needed to ensure the widespread implementation of electric timber trucks across Sweden.
After the test, the Scania truck is expected to join the SCA’s day-to-day operations. Here are some additional tidbits that SCA offers:
- This first electric truck traveling between Gimonäs and Obbola SCA will help reduce carbon emissions by around 55,000 kg per year
- The truck will complete 6 turns/day between SCA’s Gimonäs Wood Station – Obbola Paper Mill, Mon-Fri 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM – 30 km (~ 18.6 miles) round trip
- Estimated 75 minutes per trip (including loading and unloading)
- The truck will be recharged with ABB’s 180 kW charger at the Obbola Paper Mill
