Theater area apartments continue to rise as the cladding is applied

The Plaza Corporation is building the Theater District Residence and RIU Plaza hotel complex to the southwest corner of Adelaide and Widmer Streets in downtown Toronto. The hotel and apartment towers now stand four and five stories above their podiums, and have begun to see some brick slabs applied to their lower levels.

At our last update in December, the BDP quadruple design buildings had just reached 9 and 10 storeys above grade, and had begun to finish building the structure for the podium levels. Now, both towers are surmounted by cranes while flying figures cover the fourth and fifth levels.

At the base of the two buildings, the project will feature the preserved front sections of a row of Victorian homes on Widmer Street, which will eventually be filled with shops when the project is complete. To complement Victorian homes, the podium levels were covered in two tone brick panels; Multiple tones of red are at street level, and orange tones from the fifth floor are higher.

Slabs of window wall cladding were also recently spotted at the site, and shortly thereafter the first installation was spotted on the third floor.

When complete, the 49-story south tower will be home exclusively to 424 residential suites, while the 48-story north tower — marketed as Encore in the theater district — will feature 131 residential suites on 25 upper floors, with 353 RIU hotel rooms. The plaza occupies the first 23 floors. Although there are a different number of levels, both towers will eventually reach identical heights, both towers being 156 meters high.
