My parents have been wanting to buy a vacation home for some time. I now have a five-year-old daughter, and my brother is about to become a dad, so we were looking for a place to spend quality time together.
My husband and I have been living for about three and a half years Hours in Miami, but Golden Oak is our home away from home. Since we work together remotely, we can visit our daughter at least twice a month.
As a travel and parenting blogger, I get a lot of questions from my followers about what it’s like to have a home in Disney’s highly desirable residential community.
What is Disney’s Golden Oak?
Disney’s Golden Oak is a gated estate of luxury single-family homes, just four miles from Disney’s Magic Kingdom Park.
There are about 300 homes ranging in size from 1,800 square feet to 12,000 square feet. One home sold for $12 million this year, and the other is currently listed for $9.5 million.
Divided into eight neighborhoods, the homes were designed by Walt Disney Imagineering, the division of The Walt Disney Company that oversees the design and construction of its theme parks.
Residents have access to the pools, fitness center, restaurants and other Disney resorts. They also have membership to the exclusive Golden Oak Club, which offers “concierge-style services,” including private VIP park tours and tickets to special events.
Buying a home at Disney’s Golden Oak
Golden Oak first started listing homes in 2010. But even though I was a regular Disney member, I had never heard of it until my parents visited friends at their vacation home there in 2020.
During their visit, they tour one of the new homes. They directed me and my brother to show us the house. We all fell in love with the place and made a contract at full asking price.
Homes in Golden Oak are selling quickly, but we were lucky with the timing. The first floor was fully furnished, so we were all able to enjoy Thanksgiving weekend together just days after closing that year.
A look inside the “Princess Cottage”
We live in The Cottages in the Symphony Grove neighborhood. Every house has its own exotic look. We were inspired by Belle’s cabin in Beauty and the Beast.
One thing that all Golden Oak homes have in common is the little Disney-themed detail. Our property, for example, has over 50 hidden Mickey Mouse. Kids love trying to find them every time they come over.
Our house is designed in the French cottage style, particularly on the first floor.
The kitchen and dining room are fitted with wooden beams and other rustic touches.
Upstairs, the house is more clearly Disney-themed. On the second floor, my bedroom has a quote from “Beauty and the Beast” above the bed.
My brother’s room has “Winnie the Pooh” characters hand painted on the walls.
The bunk room (also known as the ‘Bambi’ room) is small but full of lovely details such as wood paneled walls and a small night light for each bed.
My favorite feature of the whole house is a spiral staircase on the second floor that leads to “Bill’s Reading Room” on the third floor, which is now the girls’ playroom.
He reclaimed wood beams on the ceilings, hand-painted graphics on the walls, a built-in bookshelf, and the same railing as the stairs on the windows.
Finally, there is a guest suite that connects to the house through the outside patio. This entire area feels like you’ve walked into a princess suite, thanks to some Disney touches like the “Alice in Wonderland” doorknob.
We also have a small pool and jacuzzi. It is completely surrounded by the house, which makes the space even more private. In the patio area, there is a dining table for six, a sitting area with sofa and chairs, a fireplace and an outdoor kitchen.
Inside Golden Oak district
We don’t visit the parks very often when we are in Golden Oak. Most of the time we just enjoy the neighborhood and spend time at home together.
We have golf carts that we can use to visit the Golden Oak course, the parks and the residents only club.
Kids love watching the Magic Kingdom fireworks from the dock at Disney’s Fort Wilderness. We also take my daughter there to ride the ponies. In the summer we use their splash board and the pool which has an amazing slide.
For us, this is truly the happiest place on earth.
