This former church is available for only 55 thousand dollars

A large estate in rural Iowa needs divine intervention.

The former Harvey United Methodist Church in Harvey offers over 2,000 square feet of possibilities for just $55,000. The lack of routine makes this former place of worship an intriguing option at just $27 per square foot.

“The opportunities are pretty endless. Because Harvey is so young, there are no zoning restrictions,” the listing agent says Hannah Vander VeerWith Sundance Realty. “It could be a single-family home, or potentially a triplex or short-term rental.”

The congregation dates back to 1902, but this building was built in 1932 after a fire destroyed the original building. Located in central Hawke State, it still has many original items.

“There are still a lot of original features and characters, [including the] Beautiful hardwood floors in the sanctuary section, the stained glass, and the bell tower with the bell is still there, she says.

Before you get ready to answer an offer, the status of the bell is a bit unclear.

“We’re assuming it still works. It’s a bit hard to get to. There’s a rope up to it, but we haven’t tried it, because it’s in the middle of the city and we didn’t want to disturb the peace,” Vander Veer says of the city of 230 people.

“I was there at about six in the morning, and the sunrise coming through those east windows was just shining,” Vander Veer says. “It was so amazing, you could just sit there and enjoy the golden light.”

The basement also contains a kitchen and two half baths, but the buyer should be prepared to add some new plumbing.

“There are no showers or bathtubs, so a little work has to be done to bring it into some sort of residential setting,” she explains.

Vander Veer says other mechanicals and infrastructure may also need updates, but overall things seem to be in very good shape.

The property is sold as is, so what you see in the listing photos is what you get, including the organ and piano.

“It was gifted to Harvey City, and they tried to sell it themselves. They weren’t very lucky, so they brought me in to list it,” Vander Veer explains. The board must vote on which offer they will accept. It should be a unanimous decision, so it’s a little different from [the sale of] A private residence in this sense.”

The City Council will screen all bids during its August 15th meeting.

“They’re ready to not have to take care of it anymore, not have to mow the lawn. It definitely needs some love,” she adds.
