3848 River Oaks Doctor, Des Moines
An uncommon “ultra-contemporary” luxury residence is listed for sale in the Salisbury Oaks neighborhood of Des Moines, hoping to attract potential homebuyers looking for an unconventional space that can also afford the $2.5 million asking price.
Designed from scratch with modern aesthetics by Kris McVicker of Marc Kris Modern Homes, the 3,855-square-foot property includes four bedrooms, five bathrooms, three family rooms, and a four-car garage.
It is located south of Grand Ave. Located on the far southern edge of the area, the 0.48-acre property was intentionally designed to take full advantage of its south-facing views.
Stephanie Thomas of RE/MAX Concepts represents the seller and reveals that McVicker chose not to install window coverings in the main living spaces. “She didn’t want to break the wall of glass, and distract from the seasons, and the trees, and the woods, and the river,” she said.
The house overlooks Irish Run Farms’ horse stables, as well as bike and walking trails and the Raccoon River, and views can be enjoyed indoors or on the outside patio.
Despite the modern design and striking white color scheme, Thomas says potential buyers have described the interior’s ambiance as “spa-like” and “calm and serene,” she said.
Thomas said MacVicker didn’t build the house with “one type of family in mind,” but the open layout offers plenty of opportunities for the owner who loves to entertain guests. A common question among new visitors was whether furniture and art were part of the seven-figure asking price.
“She would have considered leaving the furniture or selling it, if the buyer requested it,” Thomas said, including the piano on the mezzanine floor.

To balance out the neutral color palate, the interior is decked out with floral furnishings, colorful wallpapers, and “amazing chandeliers and looks like sculptures to me,” Thomas said.
From 1947 until 2019, a single-family farm house occupied the area. McVicker purchased the property and demolished the house and produced a new landscape, creating a distinctive contrast with the other residences along River Oak Drive.
“Although the South of Grand is basically traditional homes, it is filled with many unique homes of many different ages. And just because it’s an established neighborhood doesn’t mean people in those neighborhoods don’t like unique homes,” Thomas said.
The property is listed for $2,500,000 by Stephanie Thomas of RE/MAX Concepts. Call (515) 771-7788 for a tour of this home or similar properties.
