Vicki White sent Casey White children’s gifts, visited his grandson, and the mother said, ‘He loved it’

Casey White is heartbroken by the death of Vicki White, the Alabama prison supervisor who smashed the murder suspect out of prison two weeks ago and then shot her in the head as police in Indiana approached her.

Connie Moore, 62, said she has spoken to her 38-year-old son twice since he was arrested Monday and returned to William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility, where he is serving 75 years on a 2015 crime spree.

“He was crying and in pain and couldn’t figure out why he couldn’t have a relationship with anyone,” Moore said in an interview with AL.com. “He loved her and said they had a good relationship.”

Casey White was convicted in 2019 on a total of nine counts, including the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend and the kidnapping of her two roommates.

Other charges included first-degree burglary, first-degree burglary, third-degree burglary, breaking and entering a vehicle, and animal cruelty for shooting a dog and attempting to evade.

In 2020, Casey White was charged with premeditated murder on October 23, 2015, stabbing 59-year-old Connie Jane Ridgway, who was found murdered in the living room of her apartment across the street from Lauderdale County High School football. Square.

He was charged with premeditated murder during a first-degree burglary, and murder for monetary gain – meaning he was paid to commit the murder.

Lauderdale County District Attorney Chris Connolly said the arrest came after an investigator with the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office received a letter in June 2020 from Casey White.

During an interview at the Jefferson County Jail, Casey White confessed to the crime, and his statements match certain evidence at the scene that was not released, Connolly said.

Connolly later said he did not know why White decided to come forward and speak with investigators.

Court records indicate that prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Casey White, who has pleaded not guilty due to mental illness or defect.

Records show that since his confession, Casey White has been commuting between Donaldson and Lauderdale County, apparently when a relationship developed between him and Vicki White.

Moore said the couple met in 2020 when Casey White was returned to the Lauderdale County Jail after he confessed to the 2015 murder of 59-year-old Connie Ridgway.

When he returned to the state prison, Vicki White began writing to him.

“It just started out as pen pals and as time went on, he talked about how much he loved her and what a good personality she was,” Moore said.

“With the situation he was in, I was happy,” she said. “Everyone needs a pen pal and someone to talk to. I thought it was good.”

Moore said she was aware of the affair but did not know Vicki White’s real name or that she was a prisoner.

“He always called her his child or his wife,” she said.

“I didn’t really say anything because I thought well they might have one of these things going on between them and I wasn’t trying to discourage him, because I never dreamed of anything that would turn out,” she said.

Moore said she met Vicki White once.

“She just wanted to visit Casey’s granddaughter,” she said. “It seemed kind of weird.”

Casey White has two children – a son and a daughter – and a 2-year-old grandson.

“Casey called and said she was coming, and it happened that fast and she was at the door,” Moore said. “She looked really cute and nothing out of the ordinary. She didn’t stay long. I didn’t know who she was.”

For the past two years, Vicki White has been sending Christmas presents and Christmas presents to Casey White’s grandson and 12-year-old son.

He did talk about Vicki White getting him out of prison, but legally.

“Talk about that she’s going to get a lawyer and do all this and get him out of all those troubles and they’re going to be together,” she said.

I said, ‘Well Casey, why in the world would you want to spend that kind of money and it might not work. I don’t think this is a good idea unless she has more money than she knows what to do with it. ”

Moore said she didn’t realize the extent of the couples’ involvement until Vicki White got Casey White out of prison.

She learned of the escape on the news and said that was also when she learned the identity of his “wife”.

“It was a shock,” she said. “I don’t remember anything for two or three days.”

“But I knew she wasn’t damaged,” Moore said. “Casey is not the monster they made him look like.”

She said her son was diagnosed at age 18 with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

“He couldn’t do it alone. He was never alone,” Moore said. “I always took care of him or my parents and sister when they were alive.”

“It wouldn’t do anything to her, I knew it,” she said. “I told the US Marines that.”

“Then I was worried that she would kill him,” she said.

She said she did not hear anything about the couple while they were on the run.

Moore said she believes Vicki White was the mastermind behind the escape.

“Casey wasn’t planned,” she said.

Moore discovered arrest and suicide the same way she discovered escape – from the news.

“They showed everything. If there was a shootout, they would have shown both of them dead,” she said. “What they showed is all absurd.”

Moore said she did the interview “because it was important for someone to speak for Casey.”

“Beware of mental illness,” she said. “He didn’t like staying on his medication and his next option was to self-medicate.”

Moore said she doesn’t believe he was involved in the 2008 death of his ex-girlfriend Kristi Lynn Shelton Mackie, which was ruled a suicide, and said she doesn’t believe he killed Connie Ridgway.

She said she believed he confessed to getting out of Donaldson prison, as she said he was stabbed three different times while incarcerated.

“I hope they don’t find him guilty,” she said. “There are always two sides to every story and it goes back to mental illness.”

Moore said she has not spoken to her son about any details about her runaway time or Vicki White’s suicide.

A grave service for Vicky White is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Center Hill Cemetery in Lexington.

Her obituary said she left her mother, Pat Davis, as well as two brothers, a nephew, and an extended family.

Moore said she would not be present.

“My heart goes out to her family,” she said. “They just don’t know how much it hurts me that it hurts them.”
