With the holiday season approaching, many leading retail stores have announced that they will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.
Some shoppers may be disappointed about missing out on some early Black Friday sales, but an increasing number of retailers seem to be putting their staff first this holiday.
The trend for businesses to close for the holiday has been driven by the pandemic. In 2020, Walmart was the first major retailer to put out a store closing call. The following year, Target followed suit, announcing that it would close on Thanksgiving forever. Many other chain retailers are now jumping on what appears to be the end of the line for Black Friday starting a day early.

Walmart CEO John Furner announced Wednesday that for the third year in a row, stores will not open on Thanksgiving. The company first made the decision to stay closed after they received backlash from customers who were angry that employees weren’t paid overtime for holiday work.
Woerner said these practices are outdated. “It’s a thing of the past,” he said on the TODAY show. “We will be closed again on Thanksgiving. Fortunately, all of our associates will be able to spend time with their loved ones this year.”
In 2021, the popular big box store announced that it will be closing all of its store locations on Thanksgiving each year going forward.
The company’s now-permanent holiday policy was originally implemented through pandemic regulations to try to reduce large crowds in stores. While a few employees still work Thanksgiving Day to keep things running smoothly, they all receive vacation pay, according to Target.
Apple Stores located in the US will be closed on Thanksgiving, according to a company spokesperson.

Pet owners are advised to stop by Petco locations the day before or the day after the holiday.
Pet owners also won’t have the option to stop by PetSmart on Thanksgiving in November.
All PetSmart store locations will be closed, according to a company spokesperson.
